Prayers for a Father
Here are some scriptures and prayers for a father as they walk the road of parenting!
*Adjust prayers to meet the needs and situation!
Pray for His Identity in Christ as a Father
Just as you changed your identity when you became a mom your husband’s identity changed too! He gained a new title of “dad.”
Sometimes fathers feel left out in the early days of parenting because it’s mostly survival mode! Even if it is a second or third (or more!) child, there is adjustments in the role and expectations.
Just as you need reminded of your identity in Christ, pray that same prayer over your husband. He is a child of God before anything else and when he feels unsure about his new or changing role, pray he stays rooted in the knowledge that his Heavenly Father calls him His.
“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” — 1 John 3:1
“Lord I pray that my husband would see himself as your child, called by name to serve you. May this be the foundation of his identity and help him walk in this truth everyday.”
Pray for His Leadership in the Home
Leading a family is not something to be taken lightly. It is important work, perhaps the most important work!
Your husband should be the head of the family, just as you are the heart. His leadership should inspire your children to reach great lengths but also give them security in the love within their home.
It is choosing appropriate responses to issues, disciplining in ways that does not discourage and showing your children how a family loves one another. It’s setting aside the tiredness you feel and showing grace during frustrating situations.
“Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” — Ephesians 6:4
“Lord I pray my husband would seek your instruction in raising our children. Let him inspire them to love you and to lead lives that reflect who you are!”
Pray for Patience and Gentleness
There is being a leader and then there is being a father. Leadership in business is different than leadership in the home; there is no break from fatherhood!
Pray that your husband would seek to lead your family and not grow weary or exasperated in the role. Ask that God would put the fruits of spirit within reach of your husband so he can pick what he needs, as he needs it.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is… patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and self-control.” — Galatians 5:22–23
“Father I pray that my husband would continuously ask for your direction in all that he does. May the fruits of the spirit be his first choice when deciding how to deal with situations!”
Pray for His Emotional and Mental Strength
We have a better understanding of mental health in today’s society, and yet the Bible has been telling us all along how to take care of our emotional well-being! God is the most restorative element in our lives and the first place we should turn when we feel worn thin.
We need to pray that our husbands would continuously seek God’s strength and His rest. The days of fatherhood can be long and your husband needs to seek the restoration only your Heavenly Father can offer!
“Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28
“Lord I pray my husband would continuously seek your presence and rest. Let him take refuge in your unwavering love so on his weary days He can feel restored by your grace.”

Pray for His Relationship with Each Child
This is such an important prayer to pray over your husband. More than anything in his role as dad we want him to have a good relationship with each child.
Everyone is different, we all speak different love languages and as parents we need to learn how to love our children. Ask that God would reveal to your husband how to connect with his children, to love them with actions and truth. This love is what builds respect and a strong relationship.
It is the same love our Heavenly Father bestows on us, which is how we want our husbands to love their children!
“Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” – 1 John 3:18
“Heavenly Father I pray my husband would always seek ways to love our children so they feel not only his love but yours too. Let his actions exhibit the truth behind his words when he says “I love you.””
