Motherhood burnout happens more frequently than we realize. It can be hard to see the joy in our jobs when it feels like they will never end. Trying to create a Christian home seems impossible with the laundry, toys and dishes that sometimes have to take priority over other more enjoyable things. Fortunately, with the help of our Heavenly Father, we can enjoy motherhood with some simple Christian habits.

Let’s Make Some Good Habits

We know a habit is something that we do every day, maybe multiple times a day. It has become part of your normal routine and it doesn’t have to be added to your to-do list.

We sometimes think of habits as being bad. Like biting your nails. But there are good habits too, like the Christian habits we can adopt. These are things that align with scripture and help us in our walk with God. They also are going to help moms as they raise a Christian family.

The Christian habits we have as moms will transform our own lives and the homes we live in!

Christian Habits to Help Christian Moms

It’s more than going to church on Sundays and sending your kids to youth groups. As Moms, we need to delve into a relationship with God on a deeper level. We can’t always get out for Bible study or evening services, so God has to come to us. And yes Mama, He is coming to you!

Christian Habits to change your motherhood journey

We have to shift our mindset to focus on God and have Him at the forefront of our thoughts. It has to become a daily habit. God has to become a daily habit. The more we do it, the easier it gets and let me tell you, the more it will transform you!

Here are some Christian habits that can help transform your motherhood journey!

Remind Yourself That God Is Your Rock

For who is God besides the LORD?
And who is the Rock except our God?

Psalm 18:31

Moms who trust God as being the foundation for their motherhood journey will be closer to their Heavenly Father. Through the hormone and body changes, if your mind is firm on the fact that God loves you regardless of how you look and feel, it gives you peace of mind.

God is the rock moms can stand on. In every storm of motherhood, His strength is what gets us through the day. And in this knowledge, we are brought closer to Him because at times He is the only restful presence we have!

This should be what we say when we wake up and before we go to bed. Our home, our life, and our family are built on the rock and nothing will shake that. Having this Christian habit of building on the rock solidifies your home.

Pray Always

”Mama, why are you talking to yourself?” My four-year-old has started asking me this question. And often my answer is “I’m talking to God.”

I am always talking with God, we have an ongoing conversation. To me, it isn’t prayer as much as two people sharing their day. Especially when I am alone in the kitchen making a meal or folding laundry. Times when I am not actively engaging with my children or my husband.

Obviously I don’t ignore the people around me to talk to God, and if my family is close at hand I have one ear listening to them but God is at the forefront of my mind. He and I chat throughout the day like old friends. It keeps me humble, it keeps me sane and it reminds me of His goodness around me!

If I run into a room to grab something, I’ll whisper a little prayer as I am doing it. Sometimes I pray with my kids to ask for God’s protection or thank Him for something.

This is how you draw close to God. Build the relationship by conversing with Him. Pray those scriptures that you have in your kitchen window (and if you don’t, grab some from my Etsy store!) and let God strengthen you as you putter about your day.

Make God your daily habit that transforms your motherhood journey.

Give It To God

I’m getting better at this one, slowly but surely. There was a time when I said “I can handle this.” And now I try and say “God can handle this.” Even the little things like the annoying back pain from carrying heavy toddlers…make a habit of giving it to God!

And sometimes it isn’t so much that we need God to handle things but we need to know that by giving it to Him we are open to the plans He has for our lives.

Motherhood can feel all-consuming like we have no other identity. This is when we need to dump it into His lap. The messy mom bun, the crying toddlers, the fact that the only book you’ve read today involved a blue bunny…hand all that beautiful mothering to God.

For the moment you might just be “mom” and nothing else and that can feel discouraging. But God has plans beyond that so if we hand the motherhood journey to Him, we can enjoy it knowing there is still more to come.

Finding Joy in Your Task

It can be hard to find joy in the same things that you do over and over again. Wash the same cups and bowls, sometimes three times a day. Or folding the same laundry over and over again. We have to choose to enjoy our jobs as moms.

It is in this choice that we will find joy. God asks us to have a willing spirit, in whatever task He sets before us. Moms who look at their families and decide to love them through all the tedious jobs and meltdowns are moms who are close to God. They have chosen His joy and asked that He fill their hearts with it.

Spend Time with God

Yes, this is one of the most important parts of motherhood; being close to God. We have to take time to spend with Him. Praying always, and relying on Him through every task, are all good things but you also need to have quiet time with God.

I’ve talked about this a few times, you can check out the post about Spending Time with God, but this will look different for different moms.

In the busiest times of motherhood (like newborn survival) you won’t be able to get up early or stay up at night for quiet time with God. But don’t let this become a bad habit as your kids get older. Create that Christian habit of having quiet time with God.

To be a Christian mom means having a strong relationship with God. And this can’t happen if we don’t sit down with Him and learn from Him.

Make Those Christian Habits Happen and Enjoy Your Motherhood Journey

The thing about a habit is that it is done without extra thought. It doesn’t take up brain space because our bodies and minds can do it on autopilot. We want our Christian habits to be more than autopilot, we want them to be the foundation for our lives.

When things get rough we should turn to God without thinking. When we sigh because the dishwasher needs emptying *again* we should thank God we have a dishwasher and we didn’t have to wash by hand. When we wonder if we are doing enough to teach our children, we should hand our parenting over to God and trust that He will guide us.

These are the Christian habits that will make a difference in your household and your motherhood journey. It will change you. It will start to make you into the kind of Mom you want to be because it is the kind of Mom God wants!

Start a new Christian habit today. Focus on one thing you can do that will strengthen your relationship with God and bring joy into your motherhood journey!
