Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good!
Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!

Psalm 34:8

Perhaps you have heard the saying “Not every day is good but there is good in every day.” (Alice Morse Earle) I find as a mom this is something I repeat to myself on overwhelming days.

Being a mom is a wonderful blessing but that doesn’t mean every day is a picnic. Often I run out of steam and feel defeated. I get to the bedtime routine and wonder how I made it through such a long day.

Then I remember that there still were good parts.

Even if it was a small thing, like when I made the ultimate grilled cheese sandwich. A sandwich that was perfectly browned on either side with gooey, melted cheese oozing from the middle. The toddler gobbled it up without complaint and I was once again “mom of the year,” for a few minutes anyways.

A good thing that happened in a day full of difficulty.

I’m also reminded that these good things, however small, are gifts from God. He gives us those good moments because he knows we need them.

God knows our routine, the endless jobs, the running list, the tantrums, the unanswered messages. God knows and he has good things in between those stressful moments.

So taste and see that he is good! Literally taste that amazing grilled cheese (or oatmeal or chicken nuggets or whatever you’re making) because God has provided it for you!

On the hardest days when things feel overwhelming, he gives us hope. He doesn’t promise that every day is going to be magical but he promises to be our refuge in trying times.

As a parent, this is comforting. Raising kids is tough. We need to be reminded of the moments that went well. Otherwise we get bogged down by everything that went wrong.

God knows and wants us to lean on him. He has so many good things to offer, we just need to look for them.

If you feel tired and overwhelmed, remember God’s goodness. Look for the blessings he has given you. Take refuge in him!

Not every day has to be a good day but there is good in every day because God is good!
