What Is Freedom? – 1 Peter 2:16

Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God.

1 Peter 2:16

It’s Remembrance Day this week. A time to reflect and remember the sacrifices of many men and women so we can live free.

But what is freedom? What does it mean to live free?

Usually, when we think of freedom we think of being able to go where we want, when we want and how we want. Free to meet with people, go to school and live as we please.

But there is another kind of freedom, greater than what we remember on November 11th. It is the freedom given to us by God.

The freedom from our sin.

Because Jesus sacrificed himself, we are free from the consequences of sin, which would mean death. He died so we could live. His life gave us freedom.

This is different from our earthly freedoms. This is eternal freedom! It’s a freedom we carry with us every day.

Sometimes we take our freedom for granted. We forget the cost of our sins. We nag and complain, we idolize and wish we had more of what others have. We forget that we should strive to live in peace and be content with what we have.

Freedom is more than being physically free. and while we may be free from the consequences of our sin, we only keep this freedom if we choose to follow the Lord.

Jesus didn’t make the ultimate sacrifice so we could do whatever we want!

We need to live as servants of God. In other words, we aren’t living just for ourselves. We live to honour the Lord. We need to love and care for others, be patient and kind and spread the word.

Sometimes it seems like a big task. It’s daunting and difficult, but it also brings joy. When we look for ways to help others or find contentment in little things, it makes our lives better.

It’s a small ask in return for the gift given to us.

So choose to serve! Be grateful for what you have. Spend quality time with those you love. And thank the Lord for giving the ultimate sacrifice so we can be free!
