Following the Script(ure) – Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp to my feet
and a light to my path.

Psalm 119:105

I loved drama class when I was in high school. It was one of my favourite courses. Most people thought that’s what I would take in university, I enjoyed it that much.

Looking back, I think I enjoyed the element of consistency. When working on a play, everyone had a part, with lines to say. We spent hours rehearsing. We practiced how we would walk, where we would stand, our facial expressions. Every little movement was scripted and laid out so the performance was perfect.

I took comfort in that. I had no fear on stage because I knew exactly what my job was and what I needed to do to be successful.

Unfortunately, life is more like improv than a scripted play. Improv was not my thing.

I struggle to think on my feet and act or respond quickly. Even if I try to follow a scripted response, I don’t always get the reaction I expect.

It can be a struggle. On stage and in life.

But God hasn’t completely abandoned us when it comes to a “script” for our lives. He doesn’t outline our day to day routine, or how to respond to every situation, but he does provide a good lamp to guide our steps.

This “script” is the bible!

God has given us everything we need to walk a Christian life, all written down in one wonderful book. Reading the bible helps keep us on the straight and narrow. It gives us the tools we need to live our unscripted life.

The important thing is that we read the bible everyday.

In drama class, we rehearsed every day so we knew our part by heart. We need to know the bible by heart so we can rely on it in every situation.

It can be hard to dive into scripture in the busy times of our lives. Motherhood is one of the busiest and I’ll admit I sometimes forget to read my bible.

So I memorize scripture so I can recite it to myself throughout the day. I sing worship songs and hymns as a way to remind myself of God’s goodness. I read my bible app when I have a minute.

All these things help guide me in my day to day. It may not give me explicit instructions on how to handle a toddler meltdown but it offers patience and peace in those trying times.

So if you haven’t read your bible yet today, turn to it right now! Start with Psalm 119:105, a good reminder of the light scripture offers us. Let it guide you this week!
